Training
The IRTG offers its member PhD students a training programme, aimed at strengtheing their pH-specific and broader mathematical knowledge as well as acquiring additional complementary skills.
Each year, the IRTG offers an advanced course on pHS which is aimed at members of the IRTG and at other students, both from Wuppertal and from any other university. These courses each consist of three phases:
- Lecture phase: Each summer semester, a lecture course on a pH topic is given at the University of Wuppertal. The lectures are in hybrid format and are recorded, and lecture notes are provided. This makes them easily available to students also from other universities or PhD students who join the CRC and the IRTG in later years.
- Project phase: Each lecture phase is followed by a project phase in which participants work in teams on a specific research paper and prepare a presentation.
- Final symposium: The pH course is concluded by a final symposium in January of the following year, where all project teams meet on-site with international experts, give their presentations and have the opportunity for in-depth discussions.
The past and currently planned courses are:
- Summer 2025: Introduction to pHS
- Summer 2026: Numerical Methods for pHS
- Summer 2027: Infinite dimensional pHS
- Summer 2028: Stochastic pHS
Different minicourses will be given by visiting researchers, the Mercator Fellows and other members of the CRC, addressing specific research results and latest developments from the pH community.
A portfolio of short complementary skills courses (typically one or one and a half days) is available for the members of the IRTG, for instance through the Service Centre for Academic Staff Develompent (SaPe). The doctoral students are encouraged to propose relevant topics according to their individual needs and career goals. If not yet part of the portfolio, new additional skill courses will then be established.
Two of theses courses, one on "Good Scientific Practice" and one on "Data Management" are mandatory for all members of the CRC and thus also for the IRTG students.
